Happy Fourth of July!
Every year on the Fourth of July there is a big block party in the Los Alamitos neighborhoods that ring around the Los Alamitos Air Force Base. During the day firemen and police slowly drive through the streets passing out stickers or small candies while neighbors set up buffet tables and party games to celebrate our Nation’s Independence. Children running screaming and whooping from yard to yard, zipping in and out of adults talking, laughing and calling happy sentiments to each other.

This year the weather was warm, sunny and breezy; just right for spending the whole day and night outside. We had a Chili Cook-off and declared Gregg the champ for two years in a row! Ribs were smoked with two different kinds of rub, one from Jason and one from Noelle. We might have to have a Rib cook off added onto the bill for next year. April brought out the Ice Cream buffet for dessert to the delight of every Cupcake Magic Shell fan.

When a group has been friends for a long time the conversation inevitably comes around to “Back in the day …” topics. We are not that old but saying “Back in the day …” before a story just makes it that much funnier. So when these conversations started Noelle was ready and brought out the pictures albums from a decade ago, highlighting some memorable moments in our younger days. Of course, the usual comments went round “Look at my hair!” and “What am I wearing?!” but the best had to be “And you actually married him?!”
Dennis the Pterodactyl perched in the tree hoping to get a better view of the fireworks but was disappointed because this year the launch site was moved little out of range for a good tree perch view. The launch site change catapulted everyone into action as the first burning embers hit the skies; babies and puppies were scooped up for a run down to the end of the street where the viewing was optimal.
After the last firework faded from the black night we all sighed, packed up chairs and food, and went home. It was a happy day, one that reinforces how precious our freedoms are and why we should celebrate those freedoms.
Happy Fourth of July everyone! Continue to celebrate. We are free.
